Standish, Zags run away from Seattle U

Kayla Standish scored 13 of her 23 points in the second half and Gonzaga (11-4) overcame a two-point halftime deficit to soundly beat Seattle 91-64 on the second day of the Holiday Hoops Classic Thursday at KeyArena in Seattle.

The Redhawks (4-11) shot 63 percent from the floor in the first half against the Bulldogs, but were held to just 22 points after the break.

GU took advantage by scoring 51 second-half points, using a 23-6 run to open a 15-point lead with 13:12 remaining in the game.

Standish added 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, while Courtney Vandersloot finished with 14 points and eight assists. Both were named to the all-tournament team as the Bulldogs finished 1-1 in tournament play.

Idaho 71, Portland 66: Rachele Kloke finished with a game-high 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting and the Vandals (7-5) held off a late run by the Pilots (9-6) to win at the Chiles Center in Portland.

Yinke Olorunnife added 15 points and 18 rebounds to help the Vandals take a 13-point halftime lead. Portland cut the lead to single digits in the second half, but UI hit 17 of 18 free throws – including 7 of 8 in the final three minutes – to hold on for the victory.

ReZina Teclemariam led the Pilots with 13 points and Cassandra Brown added 12.

Eastern Washington 83, Willamette 35: Brianne Ryan notched a game-high 24 points, Julie Piper added 12 points and the Eagles (4-8) cruised to a win over the Bearcats (1-8) in Cheney in their final nonconference game before the start of Big Sky Conference play.

No Willamette player finished with double-digit points as the Eagles held the Bearcats to 14 points in the first half and just 21 in the second.

Carrie Ojeda notched a career-high nine boards for EWU.

Montana Tech 73, Whitworth 51: At Helena, Taesha Higbee tallied game highs in points (17) and rebounds (19) and the Orediggers (11-5) handed the Pirates (5-6) their second loss in as many nights in their final nonconference game of the season.

Lexi Belcher led Whitworth with 10 points and Lauren Picha added nine. The Pirates shot just 28.3 percent from the floor.
