Out New Orleans point guard Chris Paul will have knee surgery and miss the NBA All-Star game. Hornets coach Jeff Bower said Paul will have surgery today to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Paul is likely to be sidelined for up to a month. The NBA announced Paul was replaced on the Western Conference roster by Denver’s Chauncey Billups for the All-Star game on Feb. 14 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Paul hurt the knee Jan. 27 against Golden State, then aggravated the injury against the Chicago Bulls on Friday. Paul averages a team-high 20.4 points and an NBA-best 11.2 assists.

Agree Right-hander Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to an $80 million, five-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told the AP. The person said the contract could be completed as soon as today. Verlander won a career-high 19 games with a career-best 3.45 ERA last season.

Signed Phoenix Mercury coach Corey Gaines, who guided the team to its second WNBA championship in three years last season, has been re-signed to a one-year contract. Terms were not released.

Died Longtime member of the New York Knicks organization Dick McGuire, part of a basketball Hall of Fame family, died of natural causes. He was 84. The Knicks said McGuire died at Huntington Hospital in Long Island. Dick’s brother Al McGuire, who coached Marquette to an NCAA title, is also in the Hall of Fame. Dick was a part of the Knicks’ organization for 53 of its 64 seasons.

•Former University of Massachusetts football coach Bob Pickett, who led the Minutemen to four Yankee Conference championships, has died in Florida. He was 75. There were no details as to the cause of death.

Hired Former Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles as a senior assistant/defensive backs coach. Jauron replaces Brian Stewart, who left after one season to become defensive coordinator at the University of Houston.

•Tennessee Volunteers football coach Derek Dooley announced he’s hired Boise State defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox for the same post with the Vols. Wilcox, 33, has spent the last four seasons at BSU.
