UI’s Pope breaks record in vault

Idaho senior Lucas Pope broke his pole vault record at the Runners Soul Open, clearing a height of 17 feet, 61/2 inches to win the event Saturday at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

Pope shattered the original record of 16-81/4, which stood for 25 years, earlier this season.

Paul Dittmer added a win for the Vandals, taking first in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7:93 seconds.

UI’s Beau Whitney won the 35-pound throw, hitting 61-81/4.

Washington State also saw plenty of strong performances as 13 Cougars hit lifetime bests, led by sophomore Morgan Clem’s 7.75 in the women’s 60 .

Freshman Cindy Robinson added a victory in the 200 in 25.12 after finishing third in the 60 meters in 7.89.

Washington State’s Brittnay Crabb won the 400 in 58.22.

Baseball

Whitworth’s season-opening doubleheader against Occidental College at Los Angeles was cut to one game because of rain, and the host Tigers (1-0) pounced for a 12-2 nonconference victory.

The Pirates (0-1) struck for one run in the sixth inning, but already trailed 6-0 going into that frame.

Logan Allen led the Tigers with two hits, three runs and three RBIs. Starter Cory Popham allowed one run on five hits in 61/3 innings for his first career win.

Nathan Johnson earned the loss for Whitworth, allowing six runs in four innings.

The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. today.

Women’s swimming

Senior Amanda Morrow won the 1- and 3-meter diving events and Idaho defeated interstate rival Washington State 123-108 in Moscow. Morrow set a school record with a score of 272.90 in the 1-meter event.

Hockey

Uriah Machuga and Jake Peterson each scored a goal to spark the Spokane Braves to a 2-1 road win over the Castlegar Rebels in KIJHL action.

Third-place Spokane (28-19-0-2, 58 points), which has won three straight games, gained ground on the second-place Rebels (28-15-2-2, 60 points). The Chiefs host Castlegar on Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. in what could be a showdown for home ice in the playoffs.
