Pirates, Tigers split twin bill

J.R. Jarrell hit a three-run home run in the final inning and Kyle Krustangel added an insurance homer to lift visiting Whitworth University to a 7-5 victory over Occidental in the nightcap of a non-conference baseball doubleheader in Los Angeles, giving the Pirates their first win of the season.

The host Tigers (2-1) came from behind to win the opener 9-6.

The Pirates (1-2) grabbed a 5-0 lead through four innings in the opener, but Occidental rallied for the 9-6 win. Landon Scott hit a two-run homer for Whitworth in the three-run third inning.

Ben George (1-0) earned the win in relief in Game 2, and James King came in to record the final out to collect his first save of the season.
