Cougars sign football player

Another football player has signed to play at Washington State, the school announced Tuesday.

Coach Paul Wulff said Xavier Cooper of Tacoma brings the number of signees to 24 this season.

Cooper is a 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive end from Wilson High School in Tacoma. He had 85 tackles, including 11 sacks, as a senior.

Women’s track

The University of Idaho swept the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, with sophomore middle-distance runner Lauren Schaffer and senior thrower Mykael Bothum honored.

Schaffer ran a career-best 2 minutes, 11.77 seconds Friday to defend her 800-meter title at her school’s Vandal Invite. At the same meet, Bothum broke her school record in the shot put with a toss of 55 feet, 43/4 inches.

Women’s tennis

Junior Barbara Maciocha was named WAC Player of the Week after winning all of her singles and doubles matches during Idaho’s 3-0 week.
