Recovering Arizona ace Brandon Webb threw off the mound for the first time since undergoing right shoulder surgery. Webb said he was pleased with how he felt Tuesday after throwing between 20 and 25 pitches in the Chase Field bullpen in Phoenix. Webb made one start last year, before undergoing surgery on Aug. 4.
Skipping Detroit Shock coach and general manager Nolan Richardson says leading scorer Deanna Nolan has indicated she intends to skip the upcoming season instead of relocating with the team to Tulsa, Okla. Katie Smith, a six-time All-Star, has already said she doesn’t plan to play in Tulsa and is listed as a free agent by the league.
Dismissed St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson won’t face criminal charges over allegations that he beat a girlfriend who was nine months pregnant with the couple’s child at his Las Vegas home last year, a police spokeswoman said. Investigators found insufficient evidence that Jackson, 26, attacked Supriya Harris of Mableton, Ga., in March 2009, Las Vegas police officer Barbara Morgan said.
Withdrawn Junior lightweight titleholder Robert Guerrero withdrew from his scheduled fight against interim titleholder Michael Katsidis this week to spend more time with his wife, who has been battling cancer. Guerrero was scheduled to fight Katsidis on March 27.
Suspended Rutgers suspended Hall of Fame women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer for one game for misusing practice players. Stringer violated an NCAA bylaw which states that managers may not participate as practice players with the institution’s team if they are not eligible student-athletes.
Released Speedy outfielder Willy Taveras has been released by the Oakland Athletics, eight days after he was acquired from Cincinnati with infielder Adam Rosales for infielder Aaron Miles and a player to be named.
Died Prominent thoroughbred owner Edmund Gann, who campaigned Medaglia d’Oro and several other major stakes winners, died at his home Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. He was 86. The cause of death was cancer, according to Gann’s family.
