In brief: Community Frameworks to meet on Tuesday

CHENEY – Community Frameworks will hold an informational meeting about homeownership opportunities and affordable mortgage lending for first-time homebuyers on Tuesday at the Cheney Branch Library, 610 First St., at 6 p.m.

Potential homebuyers can learn about the new single-family home community, Takoda Park, that Community Frameworks is currently building in.

The meeting also will provide information about services provided by Community Frameworks, including down payment assistance, classes about credit, money management and mortgage basics and credit and debt counseling.

Community Frameworks will also hold a mortgage basics course on Wednesday and a first-time homebuyer informational meeting on Feb. 22 at Community Frameworks, 315 W. Mission Ave. The courses are free, but registration is required.

Julianne’s Prom Closet offers free dresses

RIVERSIDE – Girls having a tough time finding that special prom dress because money’s tight have another place in Spokane to turn.

Julianne’s Prom Closet, 218 N. Bernard St., has 500 prom and party dresses, ranging from size 1 to 24. Girls in need of a dress will need to obtain a letter from a school counselor or someone else in the community, indicating the financial need, to owner Julianne Sullivan.

At the appointment, girls can select a free gown.

The Oaks hosts basketball tournament

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Oaks Classical Christian Academy, 2303 S. Bowdish Road, will host the 2010 Mountain Christian League Basketball Tournament, beginning today and continuing through Saturday.

Thirteen private schools throughout the Inland Northwest will compete during the three-day tournament that will include 18 boys and girls basketball teams.

The first game today will begin at 1:45 p.m. Friday’s first game will begin at 12:20 p.m. Saturday’s first game will be at 10 a.m.

Applications open for aquatic centers

SPOKANE – The city of Spokane Parks and Recreation is accepting applications for more than 100 positions at the city’s new aquatic centers. Each pool will require a staff of at least 20 people, including lifeguards, aquatic aides, instructors and managers.

Positions and pay rates include: pool managers, $10.75 per hour; assistant pool managers, $10 per hour; head swim coaches, $10.75 per hour; swim coaches, $9.75 per hour; water safety instructors, $9.75 per hour; lifeguards, $9 per hour; and aquatic aides, $8.55 per hour.

Certifications must be current through September.

Interviews will be held in April and returning staff will be notified at that time. Training for lifeguards and water safety instructors, and the CPR course, will begin in May. Water safety instructors will need to be certified to teach swim lessons.
