In brief: Lincecum, Giants reach agreement

Baseball: Tim Lincecum can finally move forward from a contract situation that was unsettled all winter and focus on baseball again. Same goes for the San Francisco Giants.

Lincecum and the Giants reached a preliminary agreement Friday on a $23 million, two-year contract ahead of the scheduled start of an arbitration hearing.

The two-time reigning N.L. Cy Young Award winner gets a $2 million signing bonus, $8 million this year, $13 million in 2011 and the chance to earn performance and award bonuses. The agreement is subject to a physical.

Weather halts Daytona truck race

NASCAR: Officials postponed the Camping World Trucks race at Daytona International Speedway because of rain.

The race was rescheduled for today.

Heavy showers washed out all at-track activity at Daytona, including Sprint Cup series practice and Nationwide series qualifying. Jason White won the pole position for the truck race in qualifying Thursday.

Seahawks sign special teams help

NFL: The Seattle Seahawks have signed long snappers Patrick MacDonald and Western Washington University alum Matt Overton to address a recent problem.

The Seahawks have used six long snappers in three years since Jean-Philippe Darche left in free agency for Kansas City following the 2006 season.

Porter gone, then back: Joey Porter’s widely anticipated parting with the Miami Dolphins took a bizarre twist.

The Dolphins announced the release of the disgruntled linebacker. Less than three hours later, they said the move was “determined to be an invalid termination. Therefore at this time, Porter reverts back to the Miami Dolphins roster.”

The hitch may have involved NFL salary-cap rules, and Porter is still expected to be released or traded in the next few weeks.

Goodell gets new contract: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has been given a new five-year contract as the league heads into a key period of labor negotiations that could lead to a work stoppage in 2011.

With his contract due to expire in September, the NFL said owners voted to award the new contract when they met in December.

Six in lead at Pebble Beach; Prugh 2 back

Golf: Defending champion Dustin Johnson was among the six players tied atop the leaderboard at the Pebble Beach (Calif.) National Pro-Am on a day when the threat of showers gave way to sunshine along the Monterey Peninsula.

Also at 10-under-par 132 were Paul Goydos, Alex Cejka, Bryce Molder, J.B. Holmes and Matt Jones

Alex Prugh (University of Washington/Ferris High) moved into a three-way tie for eighth place at 8-under 136 after shooting a 68 at Pebble Beach.

Woods not in Match Play: The 64-man field at the Match Play Championship does not include Tiger Woods.

College men: Gilbert Brown and Ashton Gibbs made two free throws each in the final 30 seconds as No. 25 Pittsburgh weathered three exhausting overtimes and a West Virginia comeback to beat the No. 5 Mountaineers 98-95 at Pittsburgh.

Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker scored 24 points each for Pitt, which tied Georgetown and West Virginia for third place in the Big East by avenging a 19-point loss in Morgantown 10 days earlier.

Former coach arrested: Former Oklahoma State basketball coach Sean Sutton was arrested Thursday and spent the night in jail for allegedly trying to obtain prescription painkillers from out of state. Authorities said he appeared to be suffering withdrawal symptoms before he was released Friday.

Duchene shoots Avs past Coyotes

NHL: Rookie Matt Duchene scored his second goal of the game with 4:16 left, Craig Anderson made 31 saves, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 at Denver for their fourth consecutive victory.

Evans, rookies enjoy rare win over sophs

NBA: Sacramento’s Tyreke Evans had 26 points and San Antonio’s DeJuan Blair had 22 points and 23 rebounds to give the NBA rookies a rare victory over the sophomores, 140-128 in the Rookie Challenge at Dallas.

Russell Westbrook of Oklahoma City scored 40 points for the sophomores.

Oracle takes first duel in America’s Cup

Miscellany: BMW Oracle helmsman Jimmy Spithill led the USA trimaran to a 1-0 lead over Alinghi in the America’s Cup in Valencia, Spain.

BMW Oracle can become the first American winner of the 159-year-old sailing classic since 1992 with a victory Sunday in the best-of-3 series.
