In brief: Wall leads Wildcats past Tennessee

College men: John Wall had 24 points – one short of his career high – and Eric Bledsoe added 16 as No. 3 Kentucky fought off No. 12 Tennessee for a 73-62 victory Saturday night at Lexington, Ky.

Down 52-50 midway through the second half after a three-point play by J.P. Prince, Kentucky scored the next 10 points – six of them by Wall – to give John Calipari his first win over Bruce Pearl in a Southeastern Conference matchup. The two met annually when Calipari coached at Memphis.

Scheyer, No. 8 Duke rout Maryland: Jon Scheyer scored 22 points and No. 8 Duke marked coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 1,000th game at the school with a 77-56 rout of Maryland at Durham, N.C., in a matchup of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top two teams.

Michigan State ends skid, beats Penn State: Kalin Lucas scored 24 points in his return to the starting lineup and No. 10 Michigan State (20-6, 10-3 Big Ten) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 65-54 victory over beat Penn State (8-16, 0-12) at State College, Pa.

Seattle dominates Sacramento State: Alex Jones scored a career-high 19 points, Chris Gweth added 16 and Seattle (12-13) defeated Sacramento State (9-17) 98-67 in nonconference play at Seattle.

Jones finished 8 of 11 from the field for a game-high 19 points in only 18 minutes of action.

Iowa State shoots past No. 11 Baylor

College women: Freshman Amanda Zimmerman scored a career-high 15 points and No. 20 Iowa State (19-4, 7-3 Big 12) matched its season high with 16 3-pointers in routing No. 11 Baylor (17-7, 4-6) 69-45 at Ames, Iowa.

Kelsey Bolte hit four 3-pointers and added 14 points for Iowa State, which finished 16 of 33 from long range.

Texas Tech topples Cowgirls: Jordan Barncastle scored a career-high 19 points and Christine Hyde added 12 as Texas Tech (15-9, 3-7 Big 12) notched its second straight win against a ranked opponent by beating No. 14 Oklahoma State (18-6, 6-4) 65-57 at Stillwater, Okla.

Mavs, Wizards complete trade

NBA: The Mavericks traded forward Josh Howard and Drew Gooden to the Washington Wizards in a seven-player deal that sends Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood to Dallas.

The Mavericks also get guard DeShawn Stevenson and cash considerations from Washington. James Singleton and Quinton Ross go to the Wizards to round out the deal.

Couples takes Champions Tour lead

Golf: Fred Couples is in position for his first Champions Tour victory. He’ll have to hold on to the lead at the ACE Group Classic for at least 23 holes on today to do it.

Couples sank a 48-foot putt from well off the green on No. 12 for eagle, then made a 12-footer for birdie on No. 13 to reach 9 under before second-round play at the Naples, Fla., course was called because of darkness.

Dan Forsman was in second place, three shots back at 6 under. The two shared the first-round lead at 4 under after finishing their first rounds earlier in the day.

Coyotes’ Prucha taken off on stretcher

NHL: Phoenix Coyotes left winger Petr Prucha was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher early in the first period after taking a hard hit from Dallas’ James Neal along the boards.

The Coyotes said Prucha was conscious and taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Prucha lay on his back for about 7 minutes while emergency personnel strapped him to a gurney before rolling him off the ice. Marty Turco made 40 saves to lead Dallas to a 3-0 win in the game at Glendale, Ariz.

Peters edges Bodine to win truck race

Auto Racing: Timothy Peters has won the season-opening truck series race at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Peters passed two-time defending race winner Todd Bodine on the final lap, then edged Bodine at the line for his second career victory. Dennis Setzer finished third, followed by Jason White and Matt Crafton.

Dementieva beats Oudin to reach final

Tennis: Top-seeded Elena Dementieva rallied to defeat Melanie Oudin 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and reach the final of the Open GDF Suez at Paris for the second straight year.

Dementieva will face Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic, who upset second-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

Verdasco, Roddick reach final in San Jose: Fernando Verdasco reached his first final since October, beating Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the semifinals of the SAP Open in San Jose, Calif.

Verdasco will meet top-seeded Andy Roddick, who beat No. 7 Sam Querrey, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).

Police: Wife of slain Olympian arrested

Miscellany: Authorities say they have arrested the wife of an Olympic medalist who was gunned down in his Southern California back yard last summer.

Oxnard, Calif., police said in a written statement that 52-year-old Jane Laut was arrested in connection with the homicide of her husband, shot putter David Laut, and is being held in Ventura County Jail on $3 million bail.

David Laut – a bronze medalist at the 1984 Olympics – was shot several times in the head on Aug. 28.
