Stick with proven justice system

The Spokesman-Review

Why are we letting a handful of terrorists turn America into a military state? Republicans are suddenly embarrassed over our civil legal and justice system. The shoe bomber is in federal prison serving a long sentence, but they want the recent underwear bomber to be treated differently. What’s wrong with America displaying human rights and fair justice?

Republicans betrayed themselves when they created more federal government in the form of special prisons allowing torture and conducting surveillance of American citizens in the name of counterterrorism. They spent billions of our taxes on a handful of terror suspects and failed attacks. We have played into terrorist hands by giving them special treatment and handling. The Military Commissions Act is a Republican waste of time and our money.

Our laws don’t distinguish between bad people and really bad people. A crime is a crime, and all criminals are subject to a single system of justice. Historically, wars are fought on battlefields with rules of engagement. Mistreatment of prisoners is considered a war crime and not an “enhanced interrogation technique.” America has a fair system of justice and it shouldn’t be replaced with military commissions and torture chambers.
