UW breaks road woes

Huskies defeat Cardinal for first road win of season

Associated Press

Isaiah Thomas scored 20 points, Quincy Pondexter added 18 points and nine rebounds and Washington won on the road for the first time this year, beating Stanford 78-61 on Saturday at Stanford, Calif.

Justin Holliday added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (17-8, 7-6), who led by 15 but had to hold off a late charge by the Cardinal (11-14, 5-8).

Washington, which had not won on the road since beating USC on Feb. 21, 2009, was winless in six tries this season.

Leading 61-56 with 6:30 remaining, the Huskies went on a 15-4 run to quiet the Maples Pavilion crowd. Elston Turner and Thomas both had 3-pointers during the run, while Darnell Gant added a key tip-in off a Thomas miss.

Landry Fields and Jeremy Green scored 17 points each for Stanford.

Washington won for the fifth time in six games but remained two games back of first-place California in the Pac-10. The Huskies lost to the Golden Bears 93-81 on Thursday, a game in which coach Lorenzo Romar lamented his team’s lack of rebounding.

That wasn’t a problem against Stanford, as Washington outrebounded the Cardinal 43-38. But the Huskies, who led by 15 in the first half and by 11 at halftime, still had problems closing the game out.

Unlike in the first meeting between the schools this season, when the Huskies rolled to a 94-61 win on Jan. 14, Washington couldn’t shake Stanford.

That’s because both teams couldn’t stay out of foul trouble. The teams combined for 43 fouls, 22 committed by the Cardinal.

The difference was that Washington made most of its free throws, going 20 of 26. Stanford struggled all night from the line, making only 11 of 24.

The Cardinal, who came back from 18 down in the first half to beat Washington State 60-58 on Thursday, fell behind by 15 against Washington before rallying.

Green’s free throw with 6:36 remaining pulled the Cardinal within 61-55, but that was as close as it got. Stanford scored just two baskets the rest of the way.

Green, who made the winning jumper with 4.6 seconds left to beat Washington State, finished 6 of 17, including 1 of 9 from 3-point range.

Oregon State 63, Arizona 55: The Beavers took the lead late in the first half and never trailed again to stun the Wildcats, the Beavers’ first victory at Tucson, Ariz., in 27 years.

It was one of the biggest wins yet for second-year Oregon State coach Craig Robinson.

The loss knocked the Wildcats (13-12, 7-6) out of a second-place tie with Arizona State in the Pac-10.

Roeland Schaftenaar led Oregon State (11-13, 5-7) with 14 points, while Calvin Haynes added 13 and Seth Tarver 11.

Jamelle Horne led Arizona with 15 pounds and 14 rebounds. Derrick Williams added 13 points and Kevin Parrom 12.

The Wildcats’ Nic Wise made 1 of 11 shots, 1 of 8 3-pointers, and managed five points.

The last Oregon State victory at Arizona came on Jan. 27, 1983, one season before Lute Olson became the Wildcats’ coach.

Arizona St. 61, Oregon 51: Ty Abbott scored 19 points and Rihards Kuksiks had 12 as the Sun Devils rallied to defeat the Ducks at Tempe, Ariz., and keep pace in the Pac-10 race.

Abbott hit 5 of 13 shots from beyond the arc to spark the Sun Devils (18-8, 8-5), who trailed by nine points late in the first half. Arizona State remained a game behind California, which beat Washington State earlier in the afternoon.

The Sun Devils broke open a close game with a 12-0 run midway through the second half.

Abbott connected three times from beyond the arc during that stretch.Malcolm Armstead scored 16 points and Matt Humphrey had 11 for Oregon (12-12, 4-8), which has dropped eight of 10 games after a 2-0 start in Pac-10 play.
