Speed, alcohol cited in deadly crash

A 19-year-old Spokane woman died Sunday when the car she was riding in crashed into a tree near 54th Avenue and Hatch Road on Spokane’s South Side.

Speed and alcohol were both factors in the 2:24 a.m. crash, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. The victim’s name has not been released, pending an autopsy.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that Taylor Marean, 18, was driving a 2005 BMW at a “high rate of speed” while racing with another vehicle southbound on Hatch Road. Brooke Reese, 18, was driving the other vehicle, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am.

Reese tried to make a left hand turn at a high rate of speed, while at the same time Marean was attempting to pass her on the left, deputies reported. The two vehicles collided in a “T-bone” fashion.

The Pontiac struck a pine tree with its right-side door, killing the woman in the passenger seat. Reese was treated and released from a local hospital. Neither Marean nor his passenger, Ryan Perrizo, 19, were injured.

Motorcyclist injured after losing control

A motorcyclist was in critical condition after being thrown from his motorcycle early Sunday when he exited a parking lot at the corner of Trent Avenue and Park Road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Ricky Dale Dobson, 41, accelerated as he left the parking lot, lost control and was ejected. He wasn’t wearing a helmet. Drugs or alcohol might have been involved, patrol officers reported. Dobson was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday evening.

Security cameras stolen from schools

Security cameras were stolen over the weekend from four Spokane schools.

Sony cameras mounted on the sides of the schools, valued at $3,500 each, were taken from Regal, Whitman and Longfellow elementary schools and Shaw Middle School, according to the Spokane Police Department.

The department and Spokane Public Schools are urging neighbors to be on alert for suspicious activity and vehicles near those schools.

Broken water main prompts boil order

Residents of St. Maries received an unconventional valentine: a boil order.

The city’s water main broke Sunday, and while repair crews were able to fix the damage, authorities imposed a boil order as a safety precaution.

Mayor Tami Holdahl said anyone using city water should boil it before drinking it or using it for consumption purposes.
