In brief: Arrest warrant issued for cyclist Landis
Cycling: A French judge has issued a national arrest warrant for U.S. cyclist Floyd Landis in connection with a case of data hacking at a doping laboratory.
Judge Thomas Cassuto, who is based in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, is seeking to question Landis about computer hacking dating back to September 2006 at the Chatenay-Malabry lab, said Astrid Granoux, spokeswoman for Nanterre’s prosecutor’s office. The laboratory had uncovered abnormally elevated testosterone levels in Landis’ samples collected in the run-up to his 2006 Tour de France victory, leading to the eventual loss of his medal.
Cassuto also issued a national warrant for Arnie Baker, a retired doctor and longtime Landis coach and adviser.
UConn rebounds with upset of Villanova
College men: Kemba Walker scored a career-high 29 points and the Connecticut Huskies continued the four-day run of losses by Big East top 10 teams, beating No. 3 Villanova 84-75 on Monday night in Philadelphia.
Connecticut (15-11, 5-8) was coming off a 60-48 loss to Cincinnati, one of its worst offensive performances in years. The Huskies hit the 48-point mark less than 4 minutes into the second half.
The loss to Cincinnati came in coach Jim Calhoun’s first game back after a 31/2-week medical leave.
The Huskies became the fourth team to knock off one of the Big East’s top teams in a four-day period.
Kansas slips past A&M: Xavier Henry scored 12 points, including several free throws down the stretch, to help top-ranked Kansas escape with a 59-54 win over No. 24 Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
It’s the 11th consecutive victory for Kansas and breaks a 16-game home winning streak for Texas A&M.
UConn eludes loss, runs streak to 65
College women: Tiffany Hayes scored 20 points, Maya Moore added 18 points and 10 rebounds and top-ranked Connecticut got a rare second-half scare before pulling away to beat No. 11 Oklahoma 76-60 in Norman, Okla., to extend its unbeaten streak to 65 straight games.
Oklahoma rallied back from a 14-point, first-half deficit and led with 16 minutes left before Connecticut clamped down and started forcing the Sooners to settle for jump shots.
Jordan eager to buy Bobcats
NBA: Charlotte coach Larry Brown said that NBA legend and minority owner Michael Jordan has told him he’s doing all he can to buy majority control of the Bobcats from owner Bob Johnson.
Johnson is eager to sell the unprofitable club, and NBA commissioner David Stern said Saturday he expects a deal to be completed within two months.
Jordan may have competition. Former Houston Rockets executive George Postolos has made inquiries, and it’s possible if Postolos gets control Jordan would no longer have a role with the team.
Jordan, currently a part owner with the final say on basketball decisions, would have to put an ownership group together and agree with Johnson on a price.
Kentucky Derby precursor postponed
Miscellany: Oaklawn Park postponed the $250,000 Southwest Stakes because of freezing conditions, putting off the Kentucky Derby prep race in Hot Springs, Ark. until this weekend.
Track announcer Terry Wallace said the mile race for 3-year-olds will be held Saturday. It will be redrawn and entrants on the card Monday could opt out. He said there could be some jockey changes because of prior commitments.
Golden Gate to enter America’s Cup: Golden Gate Yacht Club has confirmed Club Nautico di Roma as the challenger of record for the 34th America’s Cup.
The San Francisco yacht club is home to Larry Ellison’s BMW Oracle team, which won the cup by sailing their trimaran to a second straight win over two-time defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland Sunday.
