WCC selects Vandersloot

WCC honors: Junior Courtney Vandersloot is the WCC women’s basketball co-player of the week, sharing the honor with Louella Tomlinson of Saint Mary’s.

Vandersloot averaged a double-double of 18.0 points and 10.0 assists, and shot 61.9 percent from the field in two wins last week.

Her nine assists in Saturday’s win over San Diego made her the WCC all-time career assist leader with 663.

GU men back in top 10

Men’s rankings: Gonzaga is back in the top 10.

The Bulldogs, who moved back into first place in the West Coast Conference and ran their overall record to 21-4, moved two spots to ninth in this week’s ESPN/USA Today Top 25. The Bulldogs spent two weeks in the Top 10 earlier this season, ranked 10th one week and moving to eighth the following week.

In the Associated Press poll, the Bulldogs moved up to No. 13.

Gonzaga, with a two-game lead in the loss column over both Saint Mary’s and Portland, sets its sights on a 10th straight WCC regular-season title with games Thursday at Loyola Marymount and Saturday at Pepperdine.

Kansas and Kentucky remained the top two teams in both polls released Monday afternoon.

Women’s rankings: The Gonzaga University women’s basketball team reached a new high as the No. 21 team in the nation in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Gonzaga won two games on the road last week in convincing fashion, beating second-place Saint Mary’s 88-75 and then whipping San Diego 75-61.

The ranking is the highest in school history.

The Bulldogs have now won 12-straight, are 21-4 overall and 10-0 in conference.

Gonzaga returns home to McCarthey Athletic Center for its final two home games. The Bulldogs play Loyola Marymount Thursday at 8 p.m. and finish the home regular season schedule against Pepperdine on Saturday.
