Whitworth men No. 7

Whitworth University climbed another step in the men’s basketball poll, moving up one spot to seventh on Monday, the school’s second highest ranking as an NCAA Division III school.

The Pirates (21-2), who were ranked sixth in January of 2007, are riding a 20-game win streak that has seen them clinch the Northwest Conference championship.

North Idaho College made short work of Colorado Northwestern in St. George, Utah, on Monday, putting the cap on a successful Scenic West Athletic Conference-opening softball road trip with 12-0 and 12-3 wins in shortened five-inning games.

Alyssa Erickson (Central Valley) pitched a five-hit shutout in the opener and Jessica Ross (Lake City) delivered a three-run home run, Shelby Gonzales (Moses Lake) a two-run homer and Briggett Plenger a solo shot to highlight a 14-hit attack. Gonzales was 3 for 4 and drove in four runs and Ross was 4 for 4.

Kathy Comack (Coeur d’Alene) pitched a three-hitter in the second game as NIC (12-8, 9-3 SWAC) ran its winning streak to nine games after dropping the first three games on the trip. Lindsey Stark (CdA) drove in four runs, two each on a first-inning double and fifth-inning single, and Juliann Hartnett had three RBIs.
