In brief: Apartments hit with second fire

An investigation was under way to determine the cause of a fire that tore through a boarded-up apartment building that had been badly damaged in a fire in early January, fire officials said.

The fire at 3004 N. Crestline Ave. was coming from the second floor windows at the building’s rear when firefighters arrived just before noon Wednesday, according to the Spokane Fire Department.

After the January fire, the building was vacated, utilities disconnected and windows boarded up. Portions of the floor were missing and the lightweight roof structure had been damaged.

No one was injured Wednesday in fighting the weakened structure’s fire, which caused an estimated $75,000 in damage.

The building may now be a total loss.

Pilot unhurt after crop duster crash

For the second time in a month, authorities in Whitman County reported a crop duster crash.

The Whitman County Sheriff’s Office found an aircraft on its nose 100 yards west of the Colfax airport runway Thursday morning.

The pilot, Brian Windsor, 56, of Colfax, was not injured. Windsor told authorities the engine of his 1977 Grumman Ag-Cat, commonly used for agricultural purposes, lost power shortly after takeoff, forcing an emergency landing.

In January a 41-year-old Pocatello, Idaho, pilot escaped injury after making an emergency landing in a 1979 Grumman single-engine aircraft near the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating both crashes.

Court’s Web site among the best

Spokane County District Court’s Web site is one of the 10 best judicial sites in the world, according to the Justice Served organization.

Justice Served provides court consulting services but has no contractual relationship with Spokane County. Officials said District Court Clerk John Witter nominated the court’s Web site.

Other court sites on the Justice Served Top Ten list for 2009 include the Singapore Subordinate Courts, Courts Service of Ireland and the California Superior Courts in Orange and Santa Clara counties.
