Student shot in hand; four suspects in custody

An Eastern Washington University student was shot in the hand early this morning during an incident in downtown Cheney. Several witnesses apparently saw the shooting and were able to give a good description of the involved vehicle to both Cheney Police and officers from the EWU Police Department, university spokesman Dave Meany said in a news release. Officers were later able to locate four suspects, and all are in custody. Three of the suspects are juveniles and one is an adult. They have not been identified. The student who suffered the gunshot wound to the hand was identified as Sharanbir S. Grewal, Meany said. The shooting occurred at about 1:18 a.m. following a confrontation in front of the El Rodeo restaurant on 2nd Street in downtown Cheney. Grewal was hit in the right hand by a single gunshot. He was going into surgery this morning at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Meany said. All four suspects were from Spokane and apparently were not attending EWU. Officers located and impounded the suspect’s vehicle and found a gun inside. Cheney Police were obtaining a search warrant to determine if it was the gun used in the assault, Meany said.
