Being wrong on purpose

The Spokesman-Review

There is a moment when ignorance, which is forgivable, slides over into willful stupidity, which is not. As I read the letters attacking Sen. Lisa Brown and the Legislature for trying to undo the stranglehold that Tim Eyman has put on our state, I wonder whether it’s ignorance or blind stupidity that is behind them.

If it’s ignorance that’s behind the bizarre notion that this state doesn’t need to find a way to balance the constitutionally mandated equivalence between state revenues and expenditures, that at least is understandable. But to attack Sen. Brown for trying to balance the books in the face of opposition from the naysayers is just stupid, or worse.

Those who feel that the state govenment is “out of control” or should “work with less” or “hold the line” against supposed increases have the obligation to say just what it is they would cut from the budget. Should we cut out the Basic Health Plan? Child care? State Patrol? Education? Maybe Tim Eyman knows what to cut; maybe the letter writers know.
