Boys State B: SJE 71, Cusick 59

YAKIMA — Dylan Schmick scored a game-high 28 points, and St. John-Endicott upset fourth-ranked Cusick 71-59 in the Class 1B boys state quarterfinals Thursday.

Schmick tallied 17 of his points in the second half as SJE (15-11) kept Cusick at bay. Warren Miller added 24 points.

SJE took control of the game with an 11-point run in the second quarter, including five points each from Miller and Cole McCanna, that gave the Eagles a 35-24 lead at the half.

The Eagles shot 56 percent (27 of 48) for the game, including a blistering 74 percent (14 of 19) in the second half. Schmick made 7 of 8 shots after intermission.

Spencer Shanholtzer led Cusick (20-7) with 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting, and Shem Norton added 14 points.

The Panthers also shot well, converting 49 percent (25 of 51) of their shots.
