UI seeks higher tuition rates

University of Idaho administrators have announced they will seek a 12 percent increase in full-time, in-state student fees for the 2010-11 school year.

The proposed increase must be approved by the Idaho State Board of Education, which historically has granted fee increases lower than those requested by the university. Board members will make their decision in April.

If approved, Idaho residents attending the UI full time will pay $296 per semester more next year than they did during this school year. That brings the total cost of full-time, in-state attendance to $2,762 per semester, up from this year’s $2,466.

Administrators are also proposing a 15 percent increase in full-time fees for students from out of state, a $756 per semester increase over this year.

In addition to the increase to full-time fees, the UI wants to raise part-time student fees by $30 per credit hour for Idaho residents and $76 per credit hour for nonresidents.

Graduate and professional students could face fee increases of 15 percent if the state board approves the UI’s requests.

The 12 percent overall increase in full-time, in-state fees breaks down to include an 11.26 percent increase in facility fees, a 16.14 percent increase in matriculation fees and a 1.83 percent increase in dedicated activity fees. Those three areas, in addition to student computing and network access fees that would stay the same, make up the cost of attendance to the UI.
