In brief: Idaho colleges to hold informational event at NIC for potential students

COEUR D’ALENE – North Idaho College will host College Information Night on Wednesday, from 5 to 7 p.m. in NIC’s Edminster Student Union Building, in the Lake Coeur d’Alene Room.

Event activities include presentations by North Idaho schools on the programs offered at their institutions, along with informational booths, how to apply for financial aid, and door prize giveaways.

College Information Night is sponsored by idahogoes.org, a collaboration among NIC, Lewis-Clark State College, the University of Idaho, Boise State University and Idaho State University.

The event is free and open to the public.

Film festival features frozen frolics as Conservation League fundraiser

SANDPOINT – The Winter Wildlands Alliance Backcountry Film Festival will be on Saturday in the auditorium of the Sandpoint Business and Events Center, 102 S. Euclid St., at 7 p.m., to benefit the Idaho Conservation League.

The festival will feature some of the year’s best backcountry films of human-powered adventure for those who love to ski, snowboard and snowshoe. Participants will vicariously surf the snow with a Japanese calligrapher, test extreme conditions in Vermont and ski the brief but “majestic” winter of Australia.

Tickets are $5 per person and will be available at the door.

Instructor’s co-workers set up fund for spouse who awaits transplant

COEUR D’ALENE – Co-workers of North Idaho College biology instructor Karen Chamberlain recently set up a fund at Mountain West Bank for Chamberlain’s husband, Dave, who is in need of a heart transplant.

Dave Chamberlain is currently under 24-hour care in Seattle after undergoing triple bypass surgery and having a pump placed in his heart. He will be under constant supervision for the next three months. Karen Chamberlain will continue to teach at NIC and travel to Seattle to be with her husband.

Donations, which will help pay for medical and travel expenses, can be made to the “Dave Chamberlain Help Fund” at all Mountain West locations.

City offers free street trees to residents willing to care for them

COEUR D’ALENE – The city of Coeur d’Alene has announced the availability of free street trees for the city’s six new subdivisions, including Sunshine Meadows, The Landings at Waterford, Ramsey Meadows, Copper Ridge, Jae’s Place and Echo Glenn.

Homeowners or residents in these subdivisions who are willing to provide care for street trees can contact the Urban Forestry division of the Coeur d’Alene Parks Department to sign up for a tree.

There is a limited number of trees and they will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Tree species still available for spring planting are honeylocust, white ash, hackberry and baldcypress.
