Jones homers twice for 5-0 Cougars

Derek Jones drilled a pair of home runs and the Washington State baseball team made a winner out of James Wise, who was making his season debut, in a 6-3 victory over Bethune-Cookman (1-6) Saturday in the final day of the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Tex.

Wise lasted five innings to earn the win, leaving after the Cougars (5-0) regained the lead 4-3 with a two-run fourth inning.

With the win over the Wildcats, the Cougars are off to their best start since 1993 when they also started 5-0.

•Jared Arehart’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh led College of Idaho (9-2) to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Whitworth (1-8) to complete the sweep of its doubleheader after beating the Pirates 11-2 in the opener in Caldwell.

Liam O’Brien took a 2-1 lead into the final frame for the Bucs but allowed a walk and three hits, including the winner by Arehart, to fall to 0-2 on the season.

In the opener, the Coyotes scored three runs in the first and didn’t allow Whitworth to answer until Marlowe Peter’s two-run double in the seventh.

The Pirates complete the three-game set today.

•Andy Hunter led with three hits, four RBIs and his second home run in as many days, but Gonzaga (2-3) fell to Kansas (3-1), which scored five runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to win 9-5 at the Peoria (Ariz.) College Showdown.

Bulldogs starter Ryan Carpenter (0-1) allowed seven runs and six hits while striking out five and walking five in 51/3 innings.

Zags reliever Liam Baron pitched 22/3 scoreless innings, striking out four.

The Bulldogs play the Jayhawks again today at 9 a.m. and then Sacramento State at 1 p.m. to close the tournament.

Softball

Lauren Maloney hit her second home run of the day and North Idaho (17-11, 14-6 Scenic West Athletic Conference) rallied for six runs in the seventh to win 7-3 in the nightcap of a doubleheader against College of Southern Idaho (20-10, 11-5) in Twin Falls.

The Cardinals lost the opener 7-3.

The Cardinals received two RBIs from Jessica Ross during a sixth-inning rally. Ross earned the win for the Cardinals in relief of Katy Comack, pitching three innings and allowing a pair of earned runs with five strikeouts.
