‘Sermon’ offensive

The Spokesman-Review

“If you like the sermon,” Bill Moos said, “show it when the collection plate is passed around.”

New WSU athletic director Moos’ evangelical financial stewardship reference offends me at multiple levels. One more example of how public universities are trending away from institutions of higher education and toward institutions of semi-professional sports.

As an alum, I will ignore the “sermon” and certainly will not give to the plate. And another thing – President (Elson) Floyd stated that Moos’ salary “… is over the average. I want it to be over the average. We’re not an average institution, so we don’t pay at that level.” Is this universally true, or only for athletics?
