Seattle man won’t fight extradition in killings
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – A Seattle man charged with the murder of his girlfriend and their 13-week-old daughter will not fight extradition to Washington state.
Santa Cruz County Assistant District Attorney Andrew Isaac said 30-year-old Daniel Thomas Hicks waived his right to contest being sent back to Seattle during a court appearance Thursday. Isaac said it is up to King County authorities to determine when they want to go to California and bring Hicks back to Washington.
Hicks is accused of killing 28-year-old Jennifer Morgan and their infant, Emma. The mother and daughter were found shot to death Dec. 22 in the basement of her parents’ Seattle home, where Morgan had lived for several years with Hicks.
Police used cell phone records to trace Hicks to Santa Cruz.
Seattle cancels plans to name park ‘Perugia’
SEATTLE – It only took a day for the city of Seattle to backpedal on its plan to name a new park “Perugia” in honor of a sister city better known these days as the Italian community where Seattle’s Amanda Knox was convicted of murdering her British roommate.
Seattle Parks Superintendent Tim Gallagher said Thursday that “due to community concerns about the naming of Perugia Park,” the city will “temporarily shelve the naming process for this park.”
In early December, an Italian jury convicted Knox, 22, of the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in a cottage the two shared in Perugia.
Knox was sentenced to 26 years in prison.
The name was chosen by a park-naming committee, composed of members of the parks board, the Seattle City Council and parks staff. Six other city parks bear the names of Seattle sister cities.
The new park is in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood.
