Girls basketball: Cardinals hold off Stags

Gabrielle Daily’s basket with 35 seconds remaining gave Medical Lake (2-5, 1-0) a one-point lead and Makenzie Biesecker hit 1 of 2 free throws to give the Cardinals a 41-39 win over the host Deer Park Stags (3-4, 0-1) in a Great Northern League opener Tuesday.

Daily finished with eight points. Alison Ruygrok led the Stags with 22 points as one of only three Stags to score.

West Valley 45, Cheney 32: Shaniqua Nilles tallied 10 points and hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to lift the Eagles (6-0, 1-0) over the Blackhawks (4-3, 0-1) in Cheney. The Eagles built their lead to 13 after three quarters, winning the turnover battle, committing 10 to Cheney’s 35.

Northeast A League

Freeman 50, Newport 34: After the Grizzlies (7-4, 0-1) shrunk the deficit to six after three quarters, the Scotties (11-0, 1-0) jumped out big in the fourth, outscoring the Grizzlies 18-8 in Newport. Megan McIntyre led the Scotties with 12 points.

Lakeside 58, Kettle Falls 42: Leslie Stillar made 3 of 6 from 3-point range and scored 19 points and the Eagles (10-1, 1-0) turned a two-point halftime lead against the Bulldogs (5-4, 0-1) into a 16-point win with a 15-3 edge in the fourth quarter in Kettle Falls.

Bi-County 2B League

Lind-Ritzville 37, Davenport 31: Kelsey Arlt scored five of her 11 points at the outset of the fourth quarter to give the Broncos the lead, and they would hold it throughout the quarter to beat the visiting Gorillas (4-5, 1-4). After allowing 10 points to Miranda Mielke in the first half, the Broncos held her to four in the second half.

Northwest Christian 35, Valley Christian 24: Colbi Neal led the Crusaders (4-6, 2-2) with 10 points and six steals and the Panthers (5-4, 1-3) struggled out of the gate, scoring just 10 points in the first half at Valley Christian. Katie Worley had nine points and 11 boards for VC.

Colfax 55, Liberty 37: Hannah Harazin scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range and Kayla Johnson added 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals for the Bulldogs (6-2, 5-0) in their win against the Lancers (6-4, 1-3) in Colfax. Liberty’s Teara Cornmesser tossed in a game-high 17 points.

Bi-County 1B League

Odessa 34, Wilbur-Creston 32: Lexi Watkins scored 15 points for the Tigers (2-6, 1-1), who earned their first league win against the Wildcats (2-9, 0-2) in Odessa.

Panorama League

Springdale 54, Wellpinit 33: Kelsey Fitzgerald scored 12 points, Jerika Cummings added 10 and the Chargers (12-0, 6-0) outscored the Redskins (4-5, 3-2) 22-9 in the first quarter en route to the victory in Wellpinit.

Columbia 67, Inchelium 16: Krista Colvin scored 12 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists and six steals, Mackenzie Parrow added 17 points and the Lions (8-2, 5-1) jumped out to a 20-2 lead after one quarter against the Hornets (0-9, 0-6) in Inchelium.

District 9 North League

Colton 85, Tri-Cities Prep 22: Kelsey and Haley Moser led a potent attack for the Wildcats (7-0, 3-0), scoring 21 and 19 points, respectively, and Mollie Kramer also scored 19 in a 1B victory over the Jaguars in Pasco.

LaCrosse-Washtucna 28, Pomeroy 26: Gladys Martinez hit a pair of free throws with 50 seconds remaining in the game to give the Tigercats (3-6 overall) a two-point lead over the visiting Pirates (2-5) and neither team could score the rest of the way in non-league action between District 9 North 2B and 1B teams.

Rosalia 36, Garfield-Palouse 23: Katelyn and Briann Maley combined for 24 points and the visiting Spartans (6-5 overall) pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Vikings (0-6) by 12 for a 17-point halftime lead in a 2B/1B matchup.

Non-league

Reardan 58, Sprague-Harrington 37: Melsey Moose led the Indians (9-1) with 10 points and they put the Falcons (2-7) away by holding them scoreless in the second quarter of a victory in Reardan.

St. George’s 46, Tekoa-Oakesdale 31: Lizzie McQuade finished with a double-double – tallying 14 points and 14 rebounds – Chessey Thomas added eight points and eight assists and the Dragons (10-1) jumped out to a 15-point lead with a strong third-quarter run against the Nighthawks (4-3) at St. George’s.

Lake City 55, Moscow 44: Gina Mitchell scored 14 and Jasmine Smith added 11 points as the Timberwolves (10-3) slowly built a lead and held on to beat the Bears (2-11) in Moscow. Abi Quinnett scored a game-high 20 to pace the Bears.

Post Falls 61, Pasco 26: Katelyn Loper scored 18 points, Brooke Litalien added 13 and the Trojans (12-4) upended the Bulldogs in Post Falls. The Trojans used a 41-point first half to gain a 22-point lead and never looked back.

Inland Empire League

Lakeland 51, Sandpoint 40: The Hawks (4-8, 2-0) trailed through three quarters but outscored the Bulldogs (1-11, 0-1) 18-6 in the fourth quarter, sparked by a 3-pointer from Emily Stecker, who finished with 18 points in Sandpoint. Christina Johnson had 14 points for the Bulldogs.

Intermountain League

Priest River 51, St. Maries 21: Melissa Hopkins scored 12 points to go with 10 rebounds and freshman Steffie Pavey scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter to help the Spartans (9-3, 2-0) put away the Lumberjacks (4-6, 0-3) in Priest River.

Timberlake 39, Bonners Ferry 27: Cassie Thompson scored 14 points and the visiting Tigers (11-1, 3-0) held the Badgers (5-7, 0-3) to 2-of-20 shooting from the floor in the second half.

North Star League

Clark Fork 48, Mullan 24: Shaina Gustafson and Chelsea Macumber combined for 27 points and the Wampus Cats (8-4, 3-0) scored 12 points in each quarter to beat the Tigers (4-6, 1-2) in Mullan.
