Announced University of Mississippi quarterback Jevan Snead is going pro, skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft after leading the Rebels to their best back-to-back seasons in nearly four decades. Snead, considered a top prospect, made the announcement Thursday in a news release issued by the university.

Transferred First-year Richmond football coach Latrell Scott has landed his first big recruit – University of Southern California backup quarterback Aaron Corp. The school announced that Corp is transferring in with two years of eligibility remaining. Corp was slated to be the Trojans’ quarterback last spring after showing promise as Mark Sanchez’s backup in 2008, but he lost the job to freshman Matt Barkley after getting hurt early in preseason camp.

Signed The son of Bears Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton has signed a deal to play indoor football with the Chicago Slaughter. Jarrett Payton signed for the 2010 season to play at running back for the Slaughter, who will begin Indoor Football League play on Feb. 27.

Denied The work-release application for ex-Giants star Plaxico Burress was denied by the New York Department of Correctional Services because of the nature of his crime. Burress pleaded guilty in August to attempted criminal possession of a weapon for having a loaded handgun in a nightclub that went off and shot him in the leg.

Out Dallas Stars center Mike Ribeiro will miss four to six weeks of the NHL season after being hit in the throat with a stick during a game against the New York Rangers. Ribeiro was placed on the injured list and will remain hospitalized in New York for a few days. He underwent a tracheotomy Wednesday night as part of a procedure to repair a throat contusion.

Apologized Former NBA star Jayson Williams apologized to police for “causing trouble” about 90 minutes after swerving into oncoming traffic and crashing his SUV into a tree in New York, prosecutors said at the ex-player’s arraignment on drunken driving charges. He didn’t enter a plea and said little beyond brief answers to a few standard questions. His bail was set at $10,000, and he will have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet if released.
