Roundup: Poor start dooms Cougars

Ify Ibekwe scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds as visiting Arizona beat Washington State 67-60 Thursday night in Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball.

Davellyn Whyte added 14 points for Arizona (7-6, 1-2).

Washington State (5-9, 0-3) was led by April Cook, who scored 15 points. Freshman Carly Noyes had a career-high 15 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Cougars.

Arizona got off to a quick start, going on a 10-0 run to start the game. The Cougars shot poorly, starting off 1 of 11. Arizona led 34-28 at halftime.

After trailing by 12 in the second half, Washington State pressed and used Arizona turnovers to cut its deficit to 49-48 with just less than 8 minutes to play. But Arizona outscored WSU 14-6 during the next 4 minutes.

Arizona won despite shooting only 44 percent from the foul line.

•Sami Whitcomb had season highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds to help lead Washington to a 62-56 Pac-10 victory over Arizona State at Seattle.

Kristi Kingma scored 11 points for Washington (7-6, 2-1), which snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Sun Devils.

Whitcomb shot 8 of 16 from the field and made five 3-pointers. She scored 16 points in the first half.

Becca Tobin scored 19 and Kayli Murphy 11 to lead Arizona State (8-6, 0-3), which lost its third straight game. The Sun Devils dropped out of the Top 25 after two losses last week.

Football

The Spokane Shock of Arena Football One announced the addition of defensive lineman Brigham Harwell to their 2010 roster.

Harwell, 6-foot and 300 pounds, most recently played for the New York Sentinels of the United Football League. Harwell played four seasons at UCLA.
