Red light robbery

The Spokesman-Review

Referencing the Jan. 6 headline, “Red light cameras yet to signal safety,” I hate to say “I told you so,” but I told you so.

At the end of the day, the purpose of the red light cameras is money – fines, revenue, legalized robbery.

The Spokane City Council and Police Department might pay lip service to safety, but the payoff is money. The city makes money and the camera manufacturers make money. Citizens only pay fines and get into accidents.

The red light camera experience in other cities showed higher accident rates and this information was readily available to city authorities, which they chose to ignore. No doubt it will take a fatality or serious injury that results in legal action against the city to get them to reconsider the cameras. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen and they do the right thing.
