Region in brief: Wedding fund gets 150,000 Alcoa cans
A Spokane couple trying to fund their July wedding by recycling 400,000 cans has found a friend in the planet’s biggest name in aluminum.
A spokesman for Alcoa announced today that the corporation will donate 150,000 cans and help spread the word about what Peter Geyer and Andrea Parrish are trying to do.
Alcoa’s gift when added to recent donations has put the couple’s total at the equivalent of nearly 260,000 cans – or about 65 percent of their goal. (Follow along or see how you can help at www.weddingcans.com.)
That’s a giant leap from the equivalent of 18,441 cans that they had amassed last week when the can-do couple’s dream was spotlighted in Doug Clark’s column. Stay tuned this Thursday as Clark plans to focus on the worldwide media attention that Geyer and Parrish have received since their story took flight.
“The response has been absolutely amazing and surprising and better than we ever could have hoped for,” said Parrish, a freelance marketing and communications consultant.

Small fire empties Post Falls apartments
Residents of an apartment complex in Post Falls were evacuated for a short time Monday night while firefighters extinguished a small fire near the building.
The blaze started about 11 p.m. in a trash container in an unfinished and unoccupied commercial structure adjacent to the apartments at 310 N. Promenade Loop, said Jim Lyon, spokesman for Kootenai County Fire and Rescue.
Residents were able to return to the apartments about midnight. No injuries were reported.
On Sunday, fire crews from Kootenai and the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department also responded to a structure fire on 1627 N. Cecil Road in Post Falls, Lyon said. Three residents were displaced in that fire, which started about 8:50 a.m.
The fire was caused by shorting electrical wires in a junction box, officials said.

Coeur d’Alene bank robber sought
Coeur d’Alene police are searching for a man who robbed a downtown bank Tuesday.
The robber, who did not appear to be armed, entered the Washington Trust Bank, 218 East Lakeside Ave., about 12:30 p.m., and left with some cash.
He fled north through the Las Palmitas parking lot on North Third Street, turning east in front of the Torch Lounge, police said.
The robber is described in his 30s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, of average build, with a dark brown goatee. He was wearing a dark blue zip-up style jacket with a white T-shirt underneath, light blue jeans, a light gray baseball hat with a tan bill and light gray wool gloves.
