Coug, Eagle win twice

Washington State University’s Jeshua Anderson and Eastern Washington University’s Shene Davis were double winners and Cougars freshman and former North Central standout Andrew Kimpel, competing unattached, set a meet record in the mile at the WSU Open Indoor track and field meet Saturday in Pullman.

Anderson won the men’s 60-meter hurdles in 8.10 seconds after running 8.08 in the prelims and finished first in the 800-meter run in 1:54.34.

Davis won the women’s long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 103/4 inches and finished first in the triple jump at 37-61/2.

Kimpel, in his indoor debut, won the men’s mile in 4:17.03. He broke Andrew Jones’ 4:18.72 mark set in 2007. Ferris graduate David Hickerson was second in 4:18.46, also bettering the previous record.

Other Cougar men earning first-place finishes were: Brett Blanshan (60-meter dash, 6.87); Wesley McCann (200, 22.6); and Dan Geib (3,000, 8:34.69).

WSU’s Chelsea VanDeBrake won the women’s mile in 5:18.66, while Amanda Andrews topped the field in the 800 with a time of 2:26.35. Fellow Coug Emily Farrar won the 3,000 in 11:07.81, while Cassie Whitfield won the weight throw with a heave of 56-81/2.

Eastern’s Whitney Leavitt won the women’s 200 in 26.02 and teammate Sarah Frey won the 400 in 57.36.

EWU’s Armand Hopkins topped the men’s triple-jump field with a mark of 45-5, while Chad Butorac won the 400 in 50.73.

Community Colleges of Spokane’s Chanel James won the women’s 60 in 7.68, while Deonta Edward was first in the high jump, clearing 7-01/2.

The two-day meet featured more than 525 athletes from Washington State, Idaho, Eastern Washington, Whitworth and CCS.

Wrestling

The North Idaho Cardinals dominated the 165- and 197-pound weight classes at the Clackamas Open at Oregon City, Ore.

Jesse Nielson beat teammate Joey Pierotti by a decision in the 165 title match and Kamron Jackson won by injury default over teammate Jacob Burge in the title match at 197.

Junior hockey

Stefan Jensen banged in a goal with 13 seconds left and the Golden Rockets (23-17-0-0) eked out a 3-2 victory over the Spokane Braves (24-18-0-2) in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action in Golden, British Columbia.

Ryan Hadley-Schaal and Jesse Collins netted goals for the Braves. Spokane goalie Cash Ulrich stopped 29 of 32 shots.
