Justin Kellum, 28 and Erika Richardson, 24, of Spokane Valley, recently sampled free food, listened to music and people-watched at FanFest, which continues through Saturday night in River Park Square.

Justin: We just kind of realized this event was happening. We saw the fireworks. We were like, man, that would be really cool if we could go. So we looked at the (skating ticket) prices. We can’t really afford it. We’re both in school at Eastern.

Erika: We also went to the Davenport, and they had signs and banners all over there, too.

Justin: There’s a lot more going on than skating. If you can’t afford it, make the best out of everything around you.

Erika: We’re talking about bringing the kids down here. They’re 4 and 5.

Justin: I used to play ice hockey when I was a little boy in Wenatchee. I like the way the ice feels underneath my skate. It’s easy to get out there and slip and fall and crack your head open. Anybody can do that. It takes practice to get out there and do what you need to do.
