Prep roundup: Titans breeze to gymnastics victory

Stacie Davis and Amber Demaine finished third and fourth, respectively, in all-around to help lead the University Titans to a victory in a five-team Greater Spokane League gymnastics meet Wednesday at North Central.

U-Hi breezed to a 156.55-138.35 win over runner-up Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls). Rogers was third, followed by North Central and Ferris.

Lakeside’s Anonde Egland won the all-around with a score of 35.25. She finished first in the vault and floor exercise.

NC’s Christy Grorud was second in all-around at 34.65 after winning the balance beam and uneven bars.

Wrestling

North Central (6-1) held off the Ferris Saxons (2-5) 39-31 in Greater Spokane League action at Ferris, thanks to a couple of pivotal matches that went the Indians’ way.

Forest Cuthbert, a 152-pounder, was trailing Ferris’ Abe Minkler 5-3 with 7 seconds left in the match when he took down Minkler and put him on his back for a quick four points and a 7-5 win. At 189 pounds, Russell Stinson was penalized a point for poking NC’s Anthony Whitmarsh in the eye and it proved to be the difference in Whitmarsh’s 2-1 victory.

Elsewhere in the GSL, Central Valley’s Connor Szott (215) and Dan Schoultz (285) notched first-period pins and 125-pounder Brandon McSwain scored a takedown in overtime against Gonzaga Prep’s Kevin Kuhn to guide the visiting Bears (7-0) to a 47-18 victory over the Bullpups (0-8). Central Valley remained tied with University atop the league standings. … Andrew Basinger pulled off an upset and Jake Trotter was true to form to lead the Mead Panthers (5-3) to a 44-12 win over the visiting East Valley Knights (2-6). Basinger, a 119-pounder, came through with a reversal with 15 seconds left in the match to beat EV’s Nick Sweeney, who finished second at state last year. Trotter, the 2009 state champion, won an 11-3 major decision over state fifth-place finisher Joey Mead in the 215-pound weight class. … The unbeaten University Titans (7-0) rolled to a 67-3 win over the visiting Rogers Pirates (1-6). U-Hi’s Tyler Clark moved up a weight class to 119 and breezed to a 10-0 win over Rogers’ Vang Lor. The Titans’ Randy Totten (285) made weight for the first time this season and pinned Kenny Keller in 1 minute, 31 seconds. Cody Faulkes (189) posted a pair of third-period takedowns to fend off Rik Riojas 9-5. … Shadle Park’s Caleb Burger held off Mt. Spokane’s Tim Taigen 12-10 in overtime in the 119-pound division to help guide the Highlanders (5-2) to a 38-24 win over the visiting Wildcats (4-3).

Girls basketball

Allie Brown tossed in 17 points and Taylor Lebrett scored 10 to propel the Cheney Blackhawks (6-5, 2-3) to a 45-31 victory over the visiting Deer Park Stags (3-8, 0-5) in Great Northern League action. Alison Ruygrok netted 13 points for the Stags, who were plagued by turnovers in the first and third quarters when they were outscored 19-7.

In non-league play, Samantha Charlton and Taylor Bircher combined to score 22 points and the Kettle Falls Bulldogs (8-6) romped to a 52-10 win over the Upper Columbia Academy Lions in Spangle. … Kelsey Moser scored 12 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, Haley Moser added 17 points and Mollie Kramer scored 11 with eight rebounds to lead the Colton Wildcats (13-0) to a 63-36 win over the visiting Grangeville Bulldogs (9-5).

Boys basketball

Colton Peone hit 10 of his 12 free throws and scored 15 and Jared Pyeatt added 14 points to power the Deer Park Stags (8-3, 4-1) to a 62-51 Great Northern League road win over the Cheney Blackhawks (6-5, 2-3). DeAngelo Jones had a game-high 19 points for Cheney.

In non-league action, the Upper Columbia Academy Lions poured in 20 points in each of the first three quarters en route to a 74-57 victory over the Kettle Falls Bulldogs (1-13) in Spangle. Matt Edwards scored 15 to top KF.
