DECA seniors vie for Mr. Post Falls

DECA seniors at Post Falls High School will compete on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. for the title of Mr. Post Falls at the Post Falls High School arena.

The 2010 “From Boys to Men” contestants include:

Tyler Lowe, Jared Kennedy and Jeremy Cragin, who will all be sharing their singing talents; Ryan Odeegard will be playing the drums; Steven Brehm will play the saxophone; Jesse Ha mpsen will sing and play the guitar; and Jacob Pellerin will perform a strength stunt.

Tickets are $6 per person in advance; $8 at the door.

Ten percent of the proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club. The remainder of the funds raised will help pay for traveling expenses for DECA state and national competitions.

To be involved in Distributive Education Clubs of America, commonly known as DECA, students are required to take a marketing class where they learn job skills such as selling, promoting, advertising and appropriate appearance.

Students help Haiti

Students at Bryan Elementary School recently saved their pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to help the victims of the earthquake that devastated Haiti Jan. 12.

Bryan’s students donated their spare change to the school’s Help Haiti Relief Fund. A donation jar also was available for spare change in the school office, giving teachers, staff, and parents the opportunity to share in the fundraiser.

Chess club forming

Kids, teens, moms, dads, and everyone in between interested in chess are invited to Checkmate, a chess club offered on the first and third Saturdays of every month at the Hayden Library, 8385 N. Government Way in Hayden.

The free club meets from 10 a.m. to noon. Checkmate club members will have the opportunity to use what they’ve learned and practiced in a spring tournament.
