GSL basketball: Highlanders handle Bears

Aleisha Hathaway scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and the Shadle Park girls overcame an early deficit to beat visiting Central Valley (10-4, 7-2) 45-39 Tuesday, to drop the Bears back with the pack in the Greater Spokane League standings.

CV stayed within seven throughout the game, but the Highlanders (9-5, 6-2) were bolstered by 14 points from Chelsea Chandler and seven assists and six points from Kendra Knutsen, allowing them to pull ahead of North Central for the top spot among GSL 3A teams.

Mead 56, North Central 50: Jazmine Redmon scored 13 points with seven steals and the Panthers (12-3, 8-2) outlasted the Indians (8-6, 5-3), scoring the last four points after leading 52-50 at North Central. Riley Holsinger and Tara Van Weerdhuizen combined for 36 points and 25 rebounds to keep NC close, but the Panthers hit 7 of 14 from beyond the 3-point line to hold onto the lead throughout the game.

Gonzaga Prep 70, East Valley 42: Tia Presley recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Lindsay Stockton added 16 points and the Bullpups (10-5, 6-4) pulled away from the Knights (4-11, 3-6) with a 21-3 third quarter at EV.

Lewis and Clark 76, Mt. Spokane 54: Hayley Hendricksen had 16 points to lead four Tigers (10-5, 8-2) in double figures as they hit nine 3-pointers, including three from Hendricksen, to knock off the Wildcats (3-12, 2-7) at Mt. Spokane.

Nakia Arquette and Devyn Galland each added 14 points and Daisy Burke had 10 for LC, while Sammie Pedersen scored 12 for Mt. Spokane.

University 70, Rogers 25: Zoe Scott and Nyesha Joseph combined for 28 points and Joseph added nine rebounds as the host Titans (5-9, 3-6) raced out to a 19-5 first-quarter lead over the Pirates (0-15, 0-9) and never looked back. Kayleigh Valley contributed eight points, nine board and four assists for the Titans.

Boys

Shadle Park 65, Central Valley 58: Brett Boese scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half and the Highlanders (11-3, 7-1) built their lead to as high as 19 in the third quarter, pulling away from the Bears (5-9, 1-8) at Shadle Park. Robby Douglas added 14 points for the Highlanders. Danny Nimri and Scott Simon led the Bears with 12 points each.

Mead 57, North Central 46: Garret Swanson had 15 of his 17 points in the second and fourth quarters and the Panthers (11-4, 9-1) outshot the Indians (7-7, 5-3) at North Central to keep pace with Gonzaga Prep atop the GSL standings. Mead hit 50 percent from the floor to NC’s 36 percent.

Gonzaga Prep 83, East Valley 37: Ryan Nicholas scored 22 points with eight rebounds in just 18 minutes of action as the Bullpups (14-1, 9-1) ran away from the Knights (3-12, 2-7) with a 45-19 first half at EV.

Ryan McIntyre notched five 3-pointers for the Knights, finishing with 17 points, but, GP’s Parker Kelly was also hot from beyond the arc, hitting four 3s and finishing with 16 points.

University 78, Rogers 68: Spencer Drury scored 22 points and the Titans (6-8, 3-6) turned a one-point lead after three quarters into 10 by game’s end with a 23-14 fourth-quarter edge over the Pirates (7-8, 3-6) at U-Hi.

Kyle Bailey added a double-double for the Titans with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Tony Tabish led them with six assists. Rogers was led by Deavon Daniels’ 19 points and eight rebounds.

Lewis and Clark 61, Mt. Spokane 46: Levi Taylor had 20 points, Jeff Livingston added 14 and the Tigers (7-8, 5-5) rolled against the Wildcats (1-14, 0-9) at Mt. Spokane.

Kellen Clute had 13 points to lead the Wildcats, but as a team they shot 0 of 11 from 3-point range and committed 20 turnovers, allowing LC to take an eight-point lead by halftime.
