Fresh Sheet: Spokane to be featured on ‘Ace of Cakes’

Spokane residents might find a familiar scene if they flip over to the Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes” on Thursday evening.

Charm City Cakes designer extraordinaire Duff Goldman sculpts a cake to help a romantic firefighter propose to his amore, according to a description of the episode.

His girlfriend is from Spokane and one of the things she misses from home is the city’s centerpiece park.

The rest of the episode features Goldman as he prepares a dessert buffet for a high-end New York public relations firm celebrating Christmas in July. And the Charm City Cakes staffers imagine themselves as silent movie comedy stars.

“Ace of Cakes” contacts say Riverfront Park’s signature red wagon will be featured, along with the Clocktower.

The show airs at 10 p.m. on The Food Network.

Main Market opens

Main Market Co-op quietly opened its doors last Thursday.

A year and half in the making, the co-op at 44 W. Main Ave. is designed to feature local producers and the food they make or grow.

Members were notified of the opening and store employees were still fine-tuning operations and stocking shelves and the deli.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with plans for a grand-opening celebration week starting Feb. 15.

One need not be a member to shop there. Membership information is available at the store or online at www.mainmarket.coop.

Girl Scout cookie sales

Girl Scout cookie lovers will have to wait a bit longer to place cookie orders in our area.

We featured a story in last week’s Food section from a part of the country where cookie sales already are under way.

However, the Girl Scouts in Eastern Washington and North Idaho start their sales with pre-orders beginning Feb. 5 and will take them through Feb. 20.

Delivery of those cookies will start March 13 and then there will be cookie booths at area stores through April 11.
