Region in brief: Woman escapes burning home

Fire damaged the front portion of a home at 5112 W. Rosewood Ave. in northwest Spokane Tuesday night, and a woman living there got out without injury, firefighters said.

Crews knocked down the 9:46 p.m. fire while searching for a second occupant, but that occupant was away at the time, firefighters learned later.

Damage was contained to the front porch and living room, with smoke damage throughout the main floor. No injuries were reported.

Seven fire rigs with 24 firefighters went to the scene. The cause is under investigation.

Avista to host energy fair

Avista Utilities and Spokane Community College will put on an energy fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Lair Student Center, 1810 N. Greene St.

The event is free. Avista will provide information about payment options, energy assistance and energy efficiency. Demonstrations, complimentary food and beverages and door prizes are also part of the event.

Aid to homeless offered today

Homeless people in North Idaho can find medical care, employment opportunities, transportation assistance, food, clothing, showers and other services today at “Project Homeless Connect.”

Hosted by the Region 1 Coalition for the Homeless, the free on-site resources and referrals are provided by volunteers, businesses and social service providers.

The Homeless Connect will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Idaho National Guard Armory, 5453 E. Seltice Way in Post Falls. The armory is on the City Link bus route, which provides free transportation.

Among the other services to be provided are: a spaghetti lunch, blankets and sleeping bags, laundry vouchers, pet food, veterans’ services, bath kits, bicycle maintenance, haircuts and veterinarian services.
