In brief: Moore leads Purdue over Wisconsin

Men’s College Basketball: E’Twaun Moore scored 20 points and No. 10 Purdue held off No. 16 Wisconsin 60-57 on Thursday night at West Lafayette, Ind.

JaJuan Johnson added 14 points and Robbie Hummel had 12 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Boilermakers, who won their third straight and moved within a half-game of Wisconsin for second place in the conference.

Seven first-timers among All-Star picks

NBA: Local products Chris Bosh of Toronto and Utah’s Deron Williams are headed back to Dallas for the All-Star game, which will include seven first-time selections.

The Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks each had two players picked as reserves for the Feb. 14 game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo were chosen from the Celtics, while the Hawks are sending Joe Johnson and Al Horford.

Rondo and Horford will both make their first All-Star appearances, as will Oklahoma City swingman Kevin Durant, Charlotte’s Gerald Wallace, Memphis forward Zach Randolph, Chicago’s Derrick Rose and Williams, who played at The Colony High School near Dallas.

The remainder of the Western Conference reserves were guards Chris Paul of New Orleans and Brandon Roy of Portland, Lakers forward Pau Gasol and Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki, who was picked for the ninth time and will represent the home team.

Lewis’ layup lifts Magic over Celtics: Rashard Lewis made the go-ahead layup with 1.3 seconds remaining, and the Orlando Magic overcame a 16-point deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 96-94 at Orlando, Fla.

Lewis took the ball after a broken play and sprinted down the baseline past Kevin Garnett for an uncontested layup. Rasheed Wallace missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving the Magic their second victory in three games against the Celtics this season.

Bjorklund breaks slump, Lady Vols win

Women’s College Basketball: University graduate Angie Bjorklund broke a shooting slump and scored 20 points as No. 5 Tennessee beat Auburn 85-56 at Knoxville, Tenn.

Glory Johnson scored 15 and grabbed 13 rebounds. Shekinna Stricklen added 17 points, and Alyssia Brewer had 11 points for Tennessee.

Bjorklund entered the game leading the Lady Volunteers with 14.8 points per game but averaged just 8.8 in the past four games.

Piercy leads, Allenby sharp at Torrey Pines

Golf: Scott Piercy had the best score at Torrey Pines because he made nine birdies. Robert Allenby might have had the best round because he made no bogeys.

Piercy played the North Course at Torrey Pines and watched his scores go south in a round of 8-under 64 to grab a one-shot lead after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego.

Piercy leads a foursome of players who all played on the much shorter North Course and will all have to tackle the tougher South today. Allenby shot a 6-under 66, making him the only player among the top 15 to open with the South.

Spokane native Alex Prugh sits tied for seventh after a 5-under 67 on the North Course.

Sens beat Pens, win streak reaches eight

NHL: Brian Elliot made 30 saves to win his sixth consecutive start and the Ottawa Senators tied a club record with their eighth straight win, 4-1 over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Pittsburgh.

Ottawa matched the Washington Capitals for the NHL’s longest active win streak.

Sanchez might opt for knee surgery

NFL: New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez might have surgery this offseason to stabilize the patella ligament in his left knee, which was injured during college.

General manager Mike Tannenbaum said Sanchez would be ready “well before training camp” if he elects to have the procedure, which isn’t considered major, but he could miss some early offseason workouts.

MLS and players extend bargaining

Soccer: Major League Soccer and its players agreed to extend bargaining through Feb. 12 in an effort to avoid a work stoppage.

The league’s five-year labor contract expires Sunday.

Chinese duo wins Four Continents

Miscellany: Chinese pairs skaters Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao grabbed the gold at the Four Continents championship at Jeonju, South Korea, in their last outing before the Olympics.

The world’s No. 2-ranked pair nailed all their jumps and throws to handily outscore Americans Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker with a season’s best 126.36 points.

Swiss will forfeit Cup if U.S. wins sails issue: Defending America’s Cup champion Alinghi of Switzerland said it will forfeit the oldest trophy in international sports if American challenger BMW Oracle Racing succeeds in getting a New York court to disqualify the sails on its giant catamaran.

BMW Oracle Racing has gone to the New York State Supreme Court, arguing that the sails on the 90-foot Alinghi 5 breach America’s Cup rules because they were not made in the team’s home country.
