PASCO – The Spokane Indians’ five-game winning streak ended with a whimper Friday night.
Dustin Garneau scored on Kevin Johnson’s two-out wild pitch in the eighth inning to give the Tri-City Dust Devils a 3-2 Northwest League win at Gesa Stadium.
The three-game series ends tonight.
The win allowed the Dust Devils (8-6) to recapture first place in the East Division, ahead of Boise (8-7), Yakima (7-8) and Spokane (6-8).
Johnson (0-2) entered with two out in the seventh and T-C leading 2-1.
The Indians tied the game in the eighth off Eric Federico (1-0) with the help of their bench.
With two out and Brett Nicholas aboard on an infield single, Indians manager Tim Hulett brought in Jared Hoying to pinch run.
Hoying moved to second on Yefry Castillo’s single to center.
Hulett summoned pinch-hitter Andrew Clark, who singled to center to drive in Hoying.
Johnson ran into trouble with one out in the eighth, walking Garneau and hitting Chad Jacobsen with a pitch.
Garneau and pinch-runner Russell Wilson moved up on a groundout, and Joseph Scott walked to load the bases. With Jayson Langfels batting, Johnson uncorked the deciding wild pitch.
Billy Vopinek worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.
T-C’s Chandler Laurent doubled to right and scored on Leonardo Reyes’ grounder in the first. Laurent is hitting .360 and entered with a .739 slugging percentage.
Spokane tied the game in the second when Alejandro Selen doubled to center and scored on an error by third baseman Langfels.
Laurent walked, stole second base and scored on Reyes’ two-out single in the fifth for a 2-1 lead.
T-C, which started the NWL campaign 4-0, leads the season series with Spokane 3-1.
The Indians dropped to 2-5 on the road.
Spokane’s Danny Lima went 1 for 4 and is batting .441 with hits in all nine games he’s played.
The Indians’ Michael Olt doubled for the third consecutive game and is 5 for 10 during that time.
