Othello woman dies in crash after pursuit

A motorist apparently trying to flee after being caught lighting illegal fireworks near an Othello-area wheat field died Monday after being ejected from her car as it overturned. Two passengers survived with minor injuries.

Brittney Almaguer, 20, of Othello, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:34 p.m. accident near the intersection of McKinney and Hatton roads west of Othello, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. She wasn’t wearing a seat belt, authorities said.

Almaguer and two 17-year-old girls were lighting fireworks near a wheat field but drove away when the landowner spotted them, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The landowner told deputies he followed them by car, then blocked their path near McKinney and Hatton.

The 2008 Chevrolet Impala driven by Almaguer veered eastbound onto Hatton Road and rolled over, crashing through a barbed wire fence before stopping in a field.

Investigators discovered alcohol, fireworks and marijuana in the car.

The two unidentified passengers were treated and released from Othello Community Hospital.
