Taste for oil growing sour
Oil is the lifeblood of industrial society. Can you imagine a world without it? It is no wonder that people will do whatever it takes to preserve the status quo. This Gatsbyesque obsession with trying to keep an unsustainable way of life going no matter the cost in lives and the health of the natural world will end tragically. If the resources are finite isn’t it time to figure out how to get along when they are gone?
Are they making any more oil? Peak oil comes when the production in the world depletes faster than new oil can be obtained. That’s where we are now, with almost 50 percent of the planet’s oil coming from off shore. Huge oil “leaks” are common on the Nigerian delta. Spokane gets its refined oil from the tar sands in Alberta that has an 80-square-mile toxic lake that kills thousands of birds on a regular basis.
Capitalism is based on unlimited and ever-expanding growth. Will the billionaire polluters (BP?) push to drill in safe places like the Grand Canyon and wildlife refuges?
All living things need energy to survive, but unlimited growth is not sustainable.
