Cruise boat strikes windsurfer on lake

By The Spokesman-Review

A windsurfer sustained a severe leg injury after being hit by a Coeur d’Alene Resort cruise boat Friday.

Daniel S. Mayer, 44, of Spokane, was on a sailboard about 300 feet west of the resort boardwalk on Lake Coeur d’Alene about 3:55 p.m. when he sailed directly in front of the cruise ship Osprey, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The Osprey had 98 passengers on board and was being operated by Capt. Carol J. Parker, 49, of Rathdrum.

Mayer was struck by the bow of the ship and went under the entire length of the boat, exiting near the portside propeller, officials said.

Mayer was rescued from the water by Osprey crew and passers-by, who took him to City Beach, where he was stabilized. He then was transported to Kootenai Medical Center.

He was listed in fair condition Friday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident is under investigation.
