• The goal: To block maturation of a malaria parasite in genetically engineered mosquitoes by making them die young.

The method: Researchers used a cellular signaling gene that influences life span and immune response.

The result: Mosquitoes’ life spans were an average of 20 percent shorter; the malaria parasite was completely blocked.
