Waiting to be stimulated

As one who claims no party affiliation, I must take exception to Nancy Runyan’s letter published on July 10. She blames “Repubs” for denying a benefits extension. A couple of points:

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said unemployment compensation is a great stimulus for the economy

“Dems” have already passed a stimulus bill, of which about $400 billion remains unspent, a stimulus bill which the president promised, if passed, would ensure unemployment would not exceed 8 percent. Today we are at 9.5 percent.

Now, if unemployment is such a great stimulus why does Congress not use some of those unspent stimulus funds to extend unemployment benefits? The answer, it appears, is many in Congress want to simply add an additional $33 billion to the deficit. How will those moneys be repaid? On that they have no answer.

I might add, they do not care. For the most part, those in Congress, both “Repubs” and “Dems,” have got theirs.
