Black given extension

The San Diego Padres have extended manager Bud Black’s contract for three years through the 2013 season, with club options for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

Black has had the surprising Padres in first place in the N.L. West since April 20. They have an N.L.-best 54-37 record and a four-game lead over the Colorado Rockies.

Black was hired after Bruce Bochy left following the 2006 season.

Baldelli, Rays agree to minor league deal

Rocco Baldelli is getting back on the playing field.

The outfielder and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed to a minor league contract, and assigned him to Class-A Charlotte of the Florida State League.

He rejoined the Rays as a special instructor during spring training. He had been taking batting practice and participating in drills before most Tampa Bay home games.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Wilmer Colmenarez and free-agent pitcher Guido Gomez have been suspended for 50 games each following positive tests for performance- enhancing drugs under baseball’s minor league program.

Jonathan Weber, a retired minor league, has been suspended for 100 games following his third positive test for a drug of abuse.

Weber’s and Gomez’ suspensions take effect if they sign new contracts.

Indians expect Choo, Cabrera back soon

The Cleveland Indians expect a big boost later this week with the return from injuries of shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and right fielder Shin-Soo Choo.

Manager Manny Acta said both Choo and Cabrera should return to the team for Friday’s game.

Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will begin a rehabilitation assignment Wednesday for Triple-A Colorado Springs. … Atlanta Braves pitcher Jonny Venters has been suspended four games for throwing consecutive pitches at Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder. … Cincinnati Reds third baseman Scott Rolen has been given a cortisone shot in his right hamstring and is out of the lineup indefinitely. … The Baltimore Orioles have activated Luke Scott from the 15-day disabled list and optioned reliever Frank Mata to Triple-A Norfolk. … Right-hander Armando Galarraga is back with the Detroit Tigers after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo.
