A local credit union will match the first $5,000 donated to a fund for the children of murder victim Rebecca Schiering.

The United Health Services Credit Union established account to help Schiering’s family after Schiering was shot and killed Sunday by her ex-fiance, 39-year-old Jan R. DeMeerleer, who committed suicide. Schiering’s 9-year-old son also died from the attack, and her 17-year-old son was injured.

Schiering owned The Reclothery, a consignment clothing store in the same building as the credit union.

“She was a longtime tenant and friend in the credit union building,” said Cynthia Pace, vice president of marking for the credit union. “She’s very missed.”

Donations can be made at the credit union’s main branch at 613 S. Washington or at 1212 W. Francis.

You can also donate at any credit union shared branch. Visit www.uhscu.org for more information.

I was the first owner of The Reclothery. When I hired Rebecca, I knew I had hired a jewel. Maybe a few rough edges but a kind heart and a brilliant mind. She had many good ideas for the store and was a computer whiz (thank heaven.) She dearly loved her family and was determined to do right by her kids. I loved working with her and feel very blessed to have known her. I just feel devastated that she didn’t live to see her children grown and feel the satisfaction of making a very successful life - which, of course, she had already done. But there was so much more to come.

Bad things really do happen to good people. My love and prayers go to each and every member of both families. What a tragedy!
