Fire damages Spokane Valley home

Staff reports
A Spokane Valley home built in 1939 was heavily damaged by fire late Saturday. No one was injured. The resident at 420 S. Carnahan called the Spokane Valley Fire Department at 11:06 p.m. to report smoke coming up through the basement stairway. She and a neighbor tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the blaze from outside the home by putting a garden hose through a basement window. About 20 firefighters responded and had the fire under control with 25 minutes. The fire burned the basement, with significant smoke damage on the main floor, leaving the house uninhabitable. The resident told Red Cross officials that she would stay with friends. The cause was under investigation Sunday.
