In brief: Weather warms up today, but cooling is in the forecast

It only felt like it was 90 degrees out there. Turns out, it came up a bit short.

The National Weather Service says the official high in Spokane on Saturday was a mere 89 degrees. The average high for the day is 84.

“It’s going to get hotter,” said Todd Carter with the weather service in Spokane. “Go to the pool.”

Temperatures today should reach the mid-90s, he said. By Tuesday or Wednesday, the highs should begin to cool a bit, maybe by 4 or 5 degrees, he said, and possibly get even cooler by the end of the week.

There’s the potential for thunderstorms Monday night, Tuesday and even Wednesday, he added. However, those systems aren’t expected to bring much in the way of precipitation.

Early morning fire damages former tavern building

A vacant building that used to house the Village Squire tavern in Spokane Valley was damaged by fire early Saturday morning.

The Spokane Valley Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after a Spokesman-Review delivery carrier spotted it and called it in about 3:46 a.m. The building, at 108 S. Dartmouth Road, had been vacant for several years, Fire Department spokesman Bill Clifford said.

When firefighters arrived, the north portion of the building was “well involved in fire,” Clifford said in a news release. Battalion chiefs opted to fight the fire from the exterior, given the building’s age and unoccupied status.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the fire department at (509) 928-1700 or Crime Check at (509) 456-2233.
