Eagles end Warriors’ title hopes

Steve Sabins and Brandon Roper-Hubbert both hit home runs and closer Phillip Reamy pitched a season-high 62/3 innings to help No. 7 Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) erase a 6-1 deficit in the third inning and claim a 10-7 win over top-ranked Lewis-Clark State College in a loser-out contest at the NAIA World Series at LCSC’s Harris Field Tuesday.

Both Sabins and Roper-Hubbert slugged two-run home runs and combined to drive in five runs as the seventh-seeded Eagles (47-18) guaranteed themselves no worse than a fourth-place finish in the 10-team double-elimination tournament.

LCSC, which scored five runs in the top of the first inning and appeared to be on its way to a big win, lost for the second time in less than 24 hours and finished the season at 48-5. The Warriors were the top-ranked team the entire regular season.

Arena football

Spokane wide receiver Raul Vijil was named the AFL offensive player of the week and teammate Kevin McCullough, a linebacker, was recognized with the catch of the week (an interception) following the Shock’s 67-57 victory over top-ranked Jacksonville last Saturday at the Arena.

Vijil recorded 11 receptions for 130 yards and scored an AFL season-high seven touchdowns.
