Wall comparison won’t stand
The Mallur Nandagopal letter of 29 May, comparing the border fence with Mexico and the Berlin Wall, lacks an understanding of the illegal immigration issue.
The Berlin Wall was constructed by a socialist (communist) regime to control the East German people, by keeping them from emigrating. As part of a sovereign nation’s lawful control of its borders, the fence with Mexico is to protect U.S. citizens by denying the entry of drugs and, hopefully, to control future immigration by screening for disease, criminal behavior and terrorist activity.
Fence or no fence, illegal immigrants have no right to enter this country. And if I am greedy because I do not wish to finance their medical care, educate their children, pay for their incarceration or to subsidize any aspect of their daily lives, so be it. (Those who do not intend to respect the language or culture of this country should understand they are not welcome under any circumstances.)
That the people of Mexico and Central American are poor is indisputable, but that is another issue. In particular Mexico, a product of a past, self-proclaimed, socialist revolution, should be a lesson to us.
