Roundup: Bulldogs claim series

David Fanshawe had a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a two-run single in the fifth Thursday as Cumberland (Tenn.) won the NAIA World Series with a 4-3 win over Lee (Tenn.) at Lewiston.

The Bulldogs (58-9) began the day with a 13-7 win that eliminated Point Loma (Calif.) Nazarene (41-20-1). NAIA player of the year Matt Greener hit a grand slam and had six RBIs.

Lee (52-13) advanced to the championship round with a 10-7 win that knocked out Embry-Riddle (47-19). Lee’s Edgar Molina had five RBIs, including a three-run homer in the fifth.

•Gonzaga outfielders Drew Heid and Mark Castellitto were named to the All-West Coast Conference team.

Heid, a unanimous selection, led GU in batting average (.390), hits (92), doubles (18), triples (four), stolen bases (eight), slugging (.602), and runs (54).

Castellitto had career highs in batting average (.335), home runs (11) and RBIs (50).

GU infielders Clayton Eslick and Steven Halcomb made the All-Freshman team.

•Junior pitcher Bruce Amende (Coeur d’Alene) of York (Neb.) made the first team and junior pitcher Tyler Knigge (Lewiston) of Lewis-Clark State made the second team as NAIA All-Americans.

Football

Offensive lineman Chris Pino, who started in the Spokane Shock’s last five Arena Football League games, signed a contract with the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes.

Men’s golf

Chris Williams (Moscow High) shot a 3-under-par 69 to lead Washington as the Huskies finished fourth in stroke play and advanced to the team quarterfinals at the NCAA championships in Ooltewah, Tenn.

Williams, who started the day tied for 20th, finished tied for ninth at 4-under 212, six shots behind champion Scott Langley of Illinois.

The Huskies, who finished three rounds at 4-under 860, will meet top-ranked Oregon today.

Men’s rowing

Top-ranked Washington won all five of its preliminary heats during the first day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships on Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
